How do you even give up your current citizenship and get a new one at the same time? What’s the deal with that process?

I’ve looked this up before, and it’s definitely not a one-step thing. You have to officially notify your current country to drop your citizenship. Then, you go through the naturalization process in the new country, which might take years depending on their requirements.

First, you tell your country you want out, usually with forms and interviews. Then you work on getting into the new country—residency, requirements, even tests sometimes. Both sides have rules, so it’s a lot of back and forth.

It’s not as quick as people think. You can’t just swap one for another. The old country has to process your renunciation, which takes paperwork and money. The new country? They’ll make you prove you’re eligible, like living there for years, proving you’re not a risk, and maybe taking a language or civics test.
