How can a Green Card holder maintain their permanent resident status while living abroad temporarily, and are there specific re-entry requirements?

I would advise that you maintain your status while abroad by not staying away for over a year. Re-entry permits or returning within six months are recommended to avoid residency abandonment issues.

Yes, if the trip is less than 6 months to avoid questions about abandoning residency. If staying abroad for more than 6 months, they may need to prove ties to the US or best to apply for a re-entry permit before leaving.
