Can I work while waiting for asylum?

I think so, but you have to get work permit

After you file your asylum application (Form I-589), you must wait 150 days.Then you can apply for a work permit (called an EAD – Employment Authorization Document) by filing Form I-765.

The work permit is usually valid for 2 years, and you can renew it while your asylum case is still pending.
