Opportunities in Kenya are limited, so I’ve applied for a visiting visa to the United States and will be arriving in January. While my initial plan is just to visit, I’m hoping to explore possible immigration pathways while I’m there. I’m not sure what options might realistically be available to someone like me, what steps I should take while in the U.S., or how to stay within the law while exploring opportunities. What should I consider to prepare properly for this visit and potential future immigration?

Visiting on a tourist visa does not allow you to work or apply for permanent residency while in the U.S.

You can use your time to research legal pathways like employment-based visas, student visas, or family sponsorship options. Make sure any steps you take do not violate your current visitor status.

It’s important to consult an immigration attorney before making any decisions about changing status or seeking longer-term options. They can explain which visas you might qualify for and the proper process for applying. Planning ahead helps ensure you remain compliant and avoid jeopardizing future chances of immigration.
