In many categories, filing a timely renewal automatically extends your work authorization for a certain period. Your receipt notice usually explains whether you qualify.

Employers can use the receipt notice together with the expired EAD to verify continued work authorization if automatic extension applies to your category.

If your category doesn’t qualify for automatic extension, you must stop working when the card expires, even if the renewal is pending, to avoid violating your status.
