My stay in South Carolina has been meaningful, but I’m terrified because the date on my I-94 is set to expire this coming October. I’m from Ghana and unsure what options I have to remain legally in the U.S. before that deadline arrives. What actions can I take now to avoid deportation, and are there legal ways to extend my stay or adjust my status before my time runs out?

You should act quickly by either filing for an extension of stay or exploring a change of status before your I-94 expires. Waiting too long can lead to unlawful presence and possible removal.

Contact an immigration attorney to review your specific situation and help file the correct paperwork. Depending on your eligibility, you may request a different visa category, such as a student or work visa.

Acting before the expiration date is crucial because USCIS generally requires that applications be filed while you are still in lawful status.

If you have close U.S. citizen relatives, employment opportunities, or fear of returning to Ghana for safety reasons, additional relief options might exist. Even applying for an extension or a new visa does not guarantee approval, but it can prevent you from accruing unlawful presence while your case is pending.

Gather all relevant documents, including proof of your current ties and reason for staying. Early action provides the strongest chance to remain legally.
