My husband recently traveled to the U.S. for his studies, and I’m still in Nigeria trying to figure out the best way to join him. What visa options do I have as his spouse, and how long does it typically take before I can travel to live with him in the U.S.?

If your husband is in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa, you may be eligible for an F-2 dependent visa. This visa allows you to live with him throughout his study period.

The F-2 visa application process is fairly straightforward but depends on your husband’s school issuing the proper documentation (Form I-20). You’ll need to show proof of your relationship and his financial capacity to support you. Processing times vary but often take a few weeks to a couple of months.

If your husband is studying under a different visa type, such as J-1 or M-1, there are corresponding dependent visas (J-2 or M-2) you can apply for. Some of these allow limited work or study privileges. Be sure to review the specific visa terms before applying. Consulting an immigration attorney can help you identify the fastest and most suitable option for your situation.
