My green card was approved, but I have to travel back to India for a family emergency before it arrives. Can I leave the U.S., or will I have problems returning?

You should avoid leaving until you receive your green card or a valid travel document (e.g., I-551 stamp or Advance Parole), or you may face issues reentering the U.S.

Best to wait until you get your green card or a temporary travel stamp—leaving now could make it hard to get back into the U.S. without problems.

You can leave U.S., but don’t go until you have your physical green card or an I‑551 stamp in your passport. Otherwise, CBP may deny your return—even with I‑485 approval.
