My F-1 visa expired, but my I-20 and status are still valid. Can I travel abroad and come back with the expired visa?

No, you need a valid visa to re-enter the U.S., even if your I-20 is valid.

You can stay inside the U.S. with an expired visa as long as your status is maintained.

To return, you must apply for a new F-1 visa at a U.S. consulate abroad.

Some students avoid travel until after renewing their visa to avoid risks.
