My conditional green card expired and I filed Form I-751 on time. I received an extension notice, but my case has been pending for a long time with no updates. I need to travel internationally and also renew my driver’s license. How can I prove my status while waiting, and what should I do if agencies don’t understand the extension notice?

The I-751 extension notice serves as proof that your lawful permanent resident status continues while USCIS processes your case. When combined with your expired green card, it is valid for employment, travel, and identification purposes. Some agencies are unfamiliar with long extension periods, so bringing a printed USCIS policy explanation can help. If needed, you can also request an appointment with USCIS to obtain temporary proof of status.

Traveling with an expired green card and a valid extension notice is allowed, but you should carry both documents and allow extra time at the airport in case airline staff need to verify them. For driver’s license renewals, some state offices require supervisor review. If problems continue, USCIS can place a temporary stamp in your passport confirming your resident status.

I had issues renewing my license because the clerk didn’t recognize the extension notice. I requested a supervisor and showed USCIS guidance explaining the extension. Eventually it was accepted. These delays are frustrating, but your status remains valid while the I-751 is pending.
