My case showed one small step of movement after months of silence, which gave me hope, but now it’s been quiet again and I’m unsure whether that’s normal or if progress should continue steadily once it starts moving, so I’m curious how this played out for others.

That’s actually very normal and it’s how a lot of cases move. USCIS often works in bursts, so you’ll see one small update after a long quiet period and then nothing again while the case goes back into another queue. For many people, that first bit of movement just means the file was touched or reassigned, not that things will keep moving steadily right away. It’s frustrating, but the silence afterward doesn’t cancel out the progress you already saw, it’s just part of the uneven pacing most cases go through.
