My asylum case has been pending for several years with no interview scheduled. I keep hearing about backlog priority and new processing rules. Is there anything I can realistically do to move my case forward?

Unfortunately, long asylum delays are very common, especially for non-detained cases. USCIS generally schedules interviews based on internal priorities, country conditions, and office capacity, not simply filing date. While there is no guaranteed way to force an interview, you can submit an inquiry if your case is outside normal processing times and ensure your address and contact information are current. Some applicants also request assistance through congressional offices, though results vary.

Asylum backlogs are driven by staffing shortages and shifting policy priorities, not necessarily issues with individual cases. While filing a service request or inquiry may not immediately result in an interview, it can confirm that your case is active and properly assigned. In limited circumstances, humanitarian factors such as severe medical issues or family separation may justify an expedited request, but approvals are discretionary.

It is understandable to feel stuck during long waits, but delays alone do not mean your case is weak. Staying compliant, renewing your work authorization on time, and keeping copies of all filings is critical. Consulting with an attorney to review whether your case could be transferred to court or whether other relief options exist may also be worth exploring, depending on your situation.
