My adjustment of status interview went well, but the officer said my case needs “additional review.” It has been several months with no update, and I’m starting to worry. I haven’t received an RFE or a denial. What does additional review usually mean, and is there anything I can do while waiting?

Additional review after an interview is very common and usually means the officer needs to complete internal checks or get a supervisor’s approval before making a final decision. This can include background checks, file transfers, or verifying documents already submitted. While the waiting period can be stressful, many applicants receive approvals without any further action. You should continue monitoring your case status and ensure USCIS has your correct address. If your case goes beyond normal processing times, submitting an online inquiry is a reasonable next step.

When an officer says your case needs additional review, it does not necessarily indicate a problem. USCIS officers often cannot approve cases immediately due to workload issues or internal procedures. It’s also possible that another department must review your file before approval. Unless you receive a request for evidence or a denial notice, your case is still active. If several months pass without updates, you can request assistance through USCIS or contact your congressional representative to ask for a status inquiry.

Post-interview delays are unfortunately common, especially in adjustment cases. Many approvals happen weeks or months after interviews due to internal processing delays rather than applicant issues. During this time, your status remains pending and valid if you have proper receipts or extensions. Avoid filing duplicate applications or making unnecessary changes unless instructed. Keep copies of your documents, stay patient, and follow up only if your case exceeds posted processing timelines.
