Living in Serbia most of my life, I’ve always been close to my extended family, and recently I learned that one of my older siblings became a U.S. permanent resident several years ago. We’ve started wondering whether that family connection could eventually help me move to the United States as well. Is there any immigration process that allows a permanent resident sibling to sponsor a brother or sister for a green card?

U.S. permanent residents cannot sponsor their siblings for immigration benefits. Only U.S. citizens who are at least 21 years old can file a petition for a brother or sister.

If your sibling later becomes a U.S. citizen, they could then file a family-based petition for you under the sibling category. This process is possible but often involves long waiting periods.

Another possibility could come through other family relationships, such as marriage to a U.S. citizen or sponsorship by an immediate family member who already holds citizenship. Each family-based category has different eligibility rules and timelines. Many people in your situation also explore work or study visas while waiting for family-based opportunities to develop.
