Living here in Delaware as someone from Palestine, I’ve been wondering if asylum could be an option for me. The situation back home is complicated, and I fear that returning might put me at risk. I don’t know exactly what qualifies as grounds for asylum, or how to prove my case if I apply. Could you explain what steps I should take and what challenges I might face?

To apply for asylum, you must show that you have a well-founded fear of persecution in Palestine based on race, religion, political opinion, nationality, or membership in a particular group. The process begins by filing Form I-589 within one year of entering the U.S.

Eligibility for asylum is very fact-specific, and each case is decided individually. You’ll need strong evidence of threats or risks you face, which could include personal testimony, documents, or reports about conditions in Palestine.

Having an experienced immigration lawyer guide you can make the process clearer and more manageable.

If you are granted asylum, you can live and work in the U.S. and later apply for a green card after one year. The process, however, is long and sometimes stressful, since many cases face delays. You should also be prepared for an interview with an asylum officer or, if referred, a hearing before an immigration judge. While difficult, many people in similar circumstances have successfully received protection.
