Living abroad has been on my mind, and I am considering spending one or two years in the United States to experience a new environment and culture. I have never visited before and I am still abroad. What legal visa options allow a temporary stay like this, without immigration plans?

A B-2 visitor visa allows short stays, but it usually does not support remaining in the US for one or two full years.

Student visas like the F-1 can allow longer stays if you enroll in an approved academic or language program. The stay must be tied to studies and you must maintain student status throughout.

Exchange visitor visas such as the J-1 may allow a one to two year stay through structured programs like internships or cultural exchanges. Some J-1 categories come with home residency requirements afterward. Temporary work visas are generally not available unless a US employer sponsors you. Choosing the right option depends on whether your stay is for study, training, or cultural experience.
