Leaving Oman felt liberating for me, and when I arrived in the United States three years ago, I hoped for a fresh start. But things became complicated after my visa expired. One evening, I came home from work and found a notice to appear (NTA) waiting for me, and now I’m unsure what this means for my future here. What steps should someone in my situation take after receiving an NTA, and are there any options to fix their status or protect themselves from deportation? I’m trying to understand what choices I realistically have moving forward.

An NTA is the beginning of removal proceedings, so the first step is to consult an experienced immigration attorney immediately. They can review your case, explain what charges are listed, and help you prepare for your first court hearing. Acting quickly gives you the best chance at a positive outcome.

Depending on your circumstances, you may still have options such as cancellation of removal, asylum, or adjustment of status. Your eligibility will depend on your history, family ties, and risk factors in your home country. An attorney can evaluate which options apply to you.

It’s also important that you attend every court date listed on the NTA, as missing even one can lead to an automatic removal order. Start gathering documents that prove your work history, community ties, and any hardships you may face if returned home. Staying organized and responsive increases your chances of presenting a strong defense in immigration court.
