Lately things have become frightening where I live, and I am unsure what to do. I was in valid status before, but now I am out of status and afraid of the consequences, especially because ICE has been picking people up in my neighborhood. Going back home is not a safe option for me right now, and the fear has only grown since someone at work said officers may soon visit the factory. I need to understand what protection or steps I can take immediately. What should I know about my rights, possible defenses, and urgent actions to stay safe?

Even if you are out of status, you still have rights, including the right to remain silent and the right to speak with an attorney. Do not open the door unless officers have a valid warrant signed by a judge.

If returning home is unsafe, you may want to explore options like asylum, withholding of removal, or protection under CAT. These require showing danger or persecution. You may also have humanitarian defenses depending on your circumstances. Speaking with an attorney quickly helps you understand what is available.

You should gather documents that support your presence in the U.S., your work history, and any danger you fear back home. Avoid providing information to officers without legal guidance. If ICE appears at your workplace, you are not required to answer questions about your status. Reaching out to a local immigration legal aid group can provide immediate support and steps.
