Lately, I’ve been wondering how to move forward with my situation here in the U.S. as a student from Sudan. I came to study and things were going fine at first, but now I’m dealing with a few challenges that are starting to affect my academic performance and my ability to stay in status. What steps can I take to protect my student status, and are there any options if my situation becomes more difficult?

Your first step should be to speak with your school’s international student office to address any academic or personal issues affecting your status. They can guide you on options like reduced course load or program adjustments.

If your challenges are medical, financial, or personal, you may qualify for certain allowances under F-1 rules, but these must be documented and approved by your Designated School Official. You should also track your status carefully to avoid falling out of compliance. Consulting an immigration attorney can give you a clearer understanding of your long-term options.

If things escalate to the point where you can’t maintain your student status, you may still have pathways to stay legally. This could include reinstatement of F-1 status if you fall out of status for circumstances beyond your control. Humanitarian options may also exist depending on your situation and conditions in Sudan. Acting early is the best way to prevent complications and protect your future in the U.S.
