I’ve been living in Wisconsin for about four months now after arriving from Algeria on a temporary visa. Things have been going well, but I’m starting to really enjoy life here and would like to stay longer if possible. I’m not sure what my options are or if my current visa allows for an extension or change of status. What steps should I take to explore a longer stay or even permanent residence in the U.S.?

You can check your visa type to see if it allows for a change or extension of status before it expires. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website provides specific guidelines for each visa category.

If you’re eligible, you’ll need to file a request using the appropriate USCIS form, usually Form I-539. Make sure you apply early to avoid falling out of status.

For a more permanent option, consider employment-based or family-based green card pathways if you qualify. Some nonimmigrant visa holders can transition through sponsorship or by adjusting status. It’s always best to consult an immigration attorney to plan your next steps based on your visa type and long-term goals.
