I’ve been living in the U.S. for several years under lawful status and recently filed an application to change my immigration status. While waiting, I received an unexpected notice requesting that I appear for an interview. I was not expecting an interview at this stage and feel unprepared. I’m worried that missing something or answering incorrectly could negatively affect my case. How should someone prepare for an immigration interview when they don’t fully understand why the interview was scheduled?

Immigration interviews are often scheduled to verify information, clarify inconsistencies, or confirm eligibility. Preparation should begin by reviewing every form you submitted and ensuring your answers remain consistent. Bring originals and copies of all supporting documents, including identification, prior approvals, and notices. If something is unclear, it is acceptable to ask the officer for clarification. Staying calm, truthful, and organized is more important than memorizing answers. Interviews are fact-finding, not interrogations.

Unexpected interviews are common and don’t automatically signal a problem. Officers may simply want confirmation of details. Review your timeline carefully, especially dates, employment history, and travel. If you feel uncertain, consulting an attorney beforehand can help identify areas of concern and prepare you for likely questions. Answer honestly and concisely. Guessing or over-explaining can create confusion. Preparation and transparency usually lead to smoother outcomes.

I had an interview scheduled with little explanation and felt anxious. I focused on reviewing my filings and organizing documents logically. During the interview, I answered honestly and asked for clarification when needed. The officer appreciated straightforward answers. Preparation builds confidence and reduces mistakes.
