I’ve been living in the U.S. for almost two years now after moving here from France. My current visa will expire in a few months, and I’m starting to worry about what options I have to stay longer. Can I apply for an extension or switch to another visa type without leaving the country?

Yes, you may be able to extend or change your visa status if you apply before your current one expires.

The process depends on the visa you currently hold. For example, if you’re on a visitor visa, you can apply for an extension using Form I-539 before it expires. If you’re on a work or student visa, you might qualify to change your status to another eligible category.

You’ll need to maintain legal status throughout the process and avoid overstaying your current visa. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) looks at your reason for staying and your ability to support yourself financially. In some cases, leaving and reapplying from abroad may be a better option. It’s best to consult an immigration attorney to review your situation and timeline.
