I’ve been a green card holder for almost five years and I’m planning to apply for citizenship soon. I traveled outside the US several times, and one of my trips was about seven months long. I’m worried this might affect my naturalization application. Is that trip going to be a problem?

Trips longer than six months but less than one year don’t automatically disqualify you, but they can raise questions about continuous residence. USCIS may ask for proof that you kept strong ties to the US during that time.

I had a seven-month trip and still got naturalized. I brought evidence like my lease, job letter, tax returns, and bank statements to show I never abandoned my residence.

If the trip had been over one year, it would have been a bigger issue. Since it was under a year, be prepared to explain it clearly and honestly in your application and interview.
