I’m originally from Sudan and currently living in Texas on a temporary humanitarian parole that was granted in late 2023. As a Sudanese male, I fled because of the worsening violence and instability back home. My parole is set to expire soon, and I’m worried about what happens next. I’ve heard some Sudanese nationals have Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and others are applying for asylum. I’m not sure which path is better for me or if I can do both. I also want to work legally while I’m figuring all this out. What are my real options at this stage?

You may be eligible to apply for TPS if you meet the registration deadline and continuous presence requirements. TPS gives you protection from deportation and the ability to apply for a work permit, regardless of your parole status.

You can apply for asylum if you fear persecution in Sudan due to your political views, ethnicity, religion, or other protected grounds. It’s separate from TPS, and you can apply for both at the same time to protect yourself legally on multiple fronts.

If your parole is close to expiring and you need more time to prepare your applications, you might be able to request a re-parole or file to extend your stay temporarily, especially if you’ve already submitted a TPS or asylum application.
