I’m originally from Nigeria and currently living in Wyoming on an F-1 student visa. I’ve been doing well in school, but recently my father back home fell seriously ill, and I’ve been thinking of taking a semester off to be with him. I’m worried about how this could affect my visa status and whether I would be allowed back into the U.S. afterward. Some people say medical leave is allowed, others warn it could jeopardize my SEVIS record. I really want to do the right thing. What are my options if I need to temporarily leave the U.S. on an F-1?

You can request a temporary leave of absence through your Designated School Official (DSO). If approved and properly documented, your F-1 status can remain intact.

Leaving the U.S. without an authorized leave can cause your SEVIS record to be terminated, which would require reapplying for a visa to return. But if your DSO authorizes a medical or family emergency leave, you can stay in compliance. Always get it in writing.

Yes, you do have options, but communication with your school is key. You must speak with your DSO and request a temporary authorized early withdrawal for medical or personal reasons. If granted, you’ll need to leave the country but can reenter later with a new I-20 when ready to resume. Just be sure not to overstay or travel without proper paperwork. It’s also wise to keep records of your father’s medical condition, in case immigration ever asks for supporting documents.
