I’m originally from Lagos, Nigeria, but I’ve been living in Los Angeles for a while now as a permanent resident. I plan to travel back to Nigeria in about two months and stay there for roughly eight months to handle some important family matters. A friend mentioned something about green card holders needing to be careful with long trips abroad. I’m not sure what that means exactly — will my stay outside the U.S. for that long affect my status or make it seem like I abandoned my residency?

Yes, staying abroad for several months can raise questions about whether you still intend to live permanently in the U.S.

8 months is a long time. Keep it under 6 months or CBP can question your intent to continue living in the US.

Trips longer than six months may trigger extra questioning when you return. If you plan to stay for close to eight months, it’s wise to gather evidence showing you still maintain ties to the U.S., like housing, bank accounts, or employment. You could also apply for a reentry permit before leaving to avoid potential issues.

Make sure your time abroad doesn’t exceed one year; otherwise, your permanent resident status could be considered abandoned.
