I’m on a student visa and my program ends in a few months. I want to stay in the US to work, but I don’t know if I should apply for OPT or try to change my visa. What’s the best way to stay legally after graduation?

Most students use OPT first. You can apply up to 90 days before graduation and it gives you up to 12 months to work in your field. Make sure to file early because it can take a few months to get approved.

Some students change status to an H-1B or another work visa, but that usually requires an employer sponsor. OPT is simpler for right after graduation since it’s designed for students.

Talk to your school’s international student office. They can help you decide the timing for OPT, or discuss options like STEM extensions if your degree qualifies.
