I’m in the U.S. on a student visa. I’ll be finishing my master’s degree in engineering soon. What are my options if I want to stay and work legally in the U.S.?

You can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows you to work in your field of study for up to 12 months after graduation. If your degree is in a STEM field, you may qualify for a 24-month extension.

Your employer can sponsor you for an H-1B visa. that's a common path for international graduates. The application usually goes through a lottery process, and your employer must prove the job requires a specialized degree.

If you have exceptional skills or achievements in your field, you might consider applying for an O-1 visa, which is for individuals with extraordinary ability. This visa doesn’t have a lottery and can sometimes be processed faster.
