I’m from Zimbabwe, and I’ve been living in the U.S. for about five years now. I recently became a lawful permanent resident, and I’m hoping to bring my wife and two children to live with me here. I’ve heard different things about how long family sponsorship can take and whether it’s faster for spouses or children. What’s the process like for petitioning my family to come join me, and what kind of timeline should I realistically expect for their green cards?

As a permanent resident, you can file Form I-130 for your spouse and unmarried children under 21. The process can take one to two years depending on visa category and country of origin.

You’ll need to start by filing a separate I-130 petition for each family member. Once approved, they must wait for visa numbers to become available, which can vary based on U.S. visa caps for Zimbabwe. If you become a U.S. citizen, the wait time for your spouse and minor children may shorten.

Family reunification is one of the core parts of U.S. immigration, but the waiting time often depends on your status and visa category. Since you’re a green card holder, your spouse and unmarried children fall under the “family second preference” category. After the petitions are approved, they’ll go through consular processing in Zimbabwe before entering the U.S. Once you naturalize, you can upgrade their petitions for faster processing.
