I’m from South Africa and just arrived in the U.S. about two months ago on a visitor visa. I’ve been thinking about staying longer to study or maybe even work here if possible. Is there a way to change my visa status without leaving the country, or do I have to return home first?

Yes, you can apply to change your visa status while you’re still in the U.S., as long as your current visa hasn’t expired. For example, you could apply to switch to an F-1 student visa if you get accepted into a U.S. school. Just make sure you apply before your authorized stay ends.

You can request a change of status from within the U.S. through USCIS. It’s important not to overstay your visa while your application is being processed.

You can apply to change your status before your visitor visa expires, but you must meet all USCIS eligibility requirements.
