I’m from South Africa and I’ve been living in California for nearly three years. Recently, I was stopped by immigration officers during a routine check, and now I’ve received a Notice to Appear in immigration court for possible deportation. I’m really worried because my work permit expired a few months ago, but I’ve already filed for renewal. What should I do while waiting for my hearing, and is there any chance I can stop the deportation process?

You should contact an immigration attorney immediately to help represent you in court. Having proof that you filed your renewal before the permit expired can help your case.

Since you’ve already filed for renewal, bring all supporting documents and receipts to your hearing. An attorney may help you request prosecutorial discretion or termination of removal proceedings. Acting quickly gives you a better chance of avoiding deportation and maintaining your legal status.

Receiving a Notice to Appear doesn’t automatically mean deportation—it begins the legal process. You’ll have the opportunity to present your case before an immigration judge. Showing strong community ties, pending applications, and good moral character can help your defense. Stay proactive, attend all hearings, and consult a qualified immigration lawyer as soon as possible.
