I’m from South Africa and currently in the U.S. on an F-1 student visa. I’ve been hearing about new updates affecting international students, especially regarding work authorization and status maintenance. I’m worried about how these changes might affect me after graduation. What should I know about the recent student visa policies and how to stay compliant?

Recent policy updates focus on stricter oversight of Optional Practical Training (OPT) and maintaining full-time enrollment. It’s important to keep your SEVIS record accurate and avoid unauthorized work.

You can still apply for OPT or STEM OPT after graduation, but make sure your school’s DSO helps you file on time. Any gap in maintaining status could affect future immigration benefits. Staying informed through your university’s international office is key.

If the new changes make it harder to extend your stay, you might explore options like changing status to H-1B or another visa type. Many students transition through employment sponsorships. However, timing and eligibility matter a lot. An immigration attorney can help you plan ahead to avoid falling out of status.
