I’m from Senegal and recently moved to Maine. I married my U.S. citizen partner last month, and we are starting to gather paperwork for my green card. Some friends tell me I should file everything at once, while others say we need to wait for approval first. Practically, what steps should we take after marriage to start the process?

You and your spouse can usually file both Form I-130 and Form I-485 together if you’re already in the U.S. This is called concurrent filing.

The first step is for your spouse to submit Form I-130 to prove your marriage is valid. At the same time, you may file Form I-485 to adjust your status if you entered legally.

This helps save time, but you’ll still go through biometrics and an interview before approval.

Concurrent filing is common in your situation. Just be sure all your forms and supporting documents are accurate and complete.
