I’m from Morocco and just moved to Utah last month on an F-1 student visa to attend university. My program will take four years, and I’m hoping to work part-time while studying. I’ve heard that on-campus jobs are fine, but I’m confused about whether I can also work off-campus, especially during summer breaks. Some classmates mentioned CPT and OPT, but I’m not sure how they work or when I can apply for them. I also don’t want to do anything that might put my visa at risk. Can someone explain the rules for F-1 students when it comes to working in the US?

As an F-1 student, you can work on campus right away but need authorization for off-campus jobs.

CPT is for internships during your program, and OPT is usually after graduation.

You can start with up to 20 hours per week of on-campus work during the school year, and full-time when school is out. CPT (Curricular Practical Training) allows work off-campus if it’s tied to your field of study, but you must apply through your school’s international office. OPT (Optional Practical Training) gives you up to 12 months of work authorization after graduation, but there’s a separate application process with USCIS. Always get approval before starting any off-campus job to avoid violating your visa.
