I’m from Mali and currently studying in Utah on an F-1 student visa. I’ve been looking for part-time work to help with my expenses, but I’m confused about what kind of jobs I’m legally allowed to do. Can I work off-campus, or are there specific restrictions I need to know about as an international student trying to earn some income while studying?

F-1 students can usually work only on campus during their first academic year.

After your first year, you may qualify for off-campus work options like Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). These programs allow international students to gain hands-on experience in their field of study while maintaining their visa status.

Always get approval from your Designated School Official (DSO) before starting any job. Unauthorized employment can put your student visa at serious risk.

You can work on-campus during your first year, but off-campus jobs require special authorization like CPT or OPT—and always get approval from your DSO before starting any work.
