I’m from Kosovo and now living in Kentucky. I heard about Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and I’m wondering if people from my country can qualify. Things back home are still unstable, and I’m unsure what my options are to stay legally in the U.S. if TPS doesn’t apply to Kosovo. What should I do next?

You can’t simply stay beyond your J-1 visa period without authorization. You’ll need to explore official ways to extend or change your status.

If your situation in Kosovo involves personal danger or persecution, you might consider applying for asylum instead. It’s different from TPS but can provide similar protection. An immigration lawyer can help determine which option fits your case best.

TPS only applies to people from countries the U.S. government specifically designates due to conflict or disaster. Since Kosovo isn’t included, you’ll need another legal route to stay. Options might include student status, family sponsorship, or employment-based visas. It’s important to act before your current status expires to avoid problems later.
