I’m from Kazakhstan and living in Maine. My sister is a U.S. citizen and wants to help me come here permanently through a family visa. How long does the process usually take, and are there any ways to speed it up or stay legally in the U.S. while waiting for approval?

Sibling petitions can take several years because of visa backlogs in the family preference category. Unfortunately, there’s no legal way to fast-track it.

If you’re already in the U.S. with valid status, you must maintain it while waiting for your priority date to become current. You can’t stay legally just because a petition is pending. Once your category opens, you may apply for adjustment of status if you’re still in the country.

The wait for a sibling visa from Kazakhstan can range from 10 to 15 years, depending on the visa bulletin. It’s a long process, but maintaining lawful status during the wait is crucial. Your sister’s support still gives you a legal pathway toward residency. Patience and proper legal guidance make all the difference.
