I’m from Kazakhstan and I’ve been in the United States since shortly after COVID, working under a valid work visa. Over time, my role has changed and my employer is discussing long-term plans, but I’m unsure how this affects my visa status. I want to know whether I can extend, change, or transition my work visa, and what risks I should be aware of after staying this long in the U.S.

Your ability to stay depends on your current visa type, employer compliance, and whether extensions or transfers are legally available.

Many work visas allow extensions or employer changes, but they must be filed properly and on time. A status review with an immigration professional can help prevent accidental violations.

Long stays after COVID do not automatically harm your case, but paperwork accuracy is critical. If your job duties or employer changed, updates may be required. Planning early gives you more options for stability or future permanent pathways.

What you should do is to get your employer to sponsor you for an employment-based green card. That way, you can change status
