I’m from Iran and currently living in Wyoming. Things back home have gotten worse politically, and I’m really afraid to go back because of my past involvement in student protests years ago. My visitor visa will expire soon, and I don’t know what to do. Is there any kind of humanitarian protection or asylum option I could apply for while staying in the U.S.? I’m scared of being forced to return to a dangerous situation.

If returning to Iran puts you at real risk, you could apply for asylum or withholding of removal. Both protect people who fear persecution due to political or social factors. It’s important to gather any evidence, like old protest photos or records, that supports your claim. Many nonprofit immigration groups can help you apply even if you can’t afford a lawyer.

You can apply for asylum while in the U.S. if you fear harm for political or social reasons. The process involves submitting Form I-589 and attending an interview with USCIS. If approved, you’ll be protected from deportation and may qualify for a work permit. It’s crucial to file as soon as possible before your visa expires.
