I’m from Iran and currently in Utah on a scholarship for my graduate studies. My program will end in a few months, and I’m starting to think about what comes next. I’d love to stay in the U.S. to work or continue my studies. What are my visa or immigration options after my scholarship program concludes?

You could explore Optional Practical Training (OPT) if you’re on an F-1 visa, which allows you to work in your field for up to a year. It’s often the next step for many international students.

After your scholarship ends, your options depend on your current visa type. If you’re an F-1 student, you may apply for OPT or STEM OPT extensions if eligible. You can also look into switching to an H-1B work visa if an employer is willing to sponsor you. Another route could be pursuing a higher degree, which allows you to extend your student status.

Transitioning from a student to a work visa is common. Many students secure job offers that lead to H-1B sponsorship. Starting early gives you the best chance of maintaining legal status and a smooth transition.
