I’m from India and recently moved to Oklahoma for work on an H-1B visa. I’ve been here for a few months and I’m trying to understand the process for bringing my wife over from India to join me. I’ve heard about the H-4 dependent visa but I’m not sure what the requirements are or how long it usually takes. Some people say it’s a quick process, others say it can take months depending on the embassy and paperwork. I also heard H-4 visa holders might be able to work in some cases. Can anyone explain how this works and what steps I should take?

Yes, your wife can apply for an H-4 visa as your dependent, and the process usually starts with you sending her your approval notice and supporting documents. Timelines vary depending on the embassy’s workload.

She’ll need to apply at the US embassy in India with your H-1B approval and marriage documents, and wait for a visa interview date.

The H-4 visa process is generally straightforward. Your wife will need your H-1B approval notice, proof of your marriage, her passport, and to complete the DS-160 form. She then schedules a visa interview at the US embassy or consulate in India. Processing time can be a few weeks to a few months depending on the embassy’s schedule. If you have an approved I-140, she may also be eligible to apply for work authorization once she’s here.
