I’m from India, and my boyfriend, who is also from India, recently became a U.S. green card holder. We’re planning to get married and would like to hold our wedding here in India with family before relocating to the United States together. We want to do everything the right way and avoid delays or mistakes that could affect our future. What immigration steps should we start planning now, how does marriage outside the U.S. affect the process, and what timelines, documents, or visa options should we realistically expect as a married couple?

After you marry, your husband can file a spousal petition (Form I-130) for you as a green card holder. You would complete consular processing from India through the U.S. embassy. Processing times can be long, so early planning is important.

Having the wedding in India is allowed and does not harm your case if the marriage is genuine. You’ll need strong documentation showing a real relationship and a valid marriage. Keep records of your relationship history, wedding, and shared plans.

Because your spouse is a green card holder (not a U.S. citizen), visa availability depends on yearly limits. This means there may be a waiting period before you can immigrate. If your spouse later becomes a U.S. citizen, the process can move faster. Speaking with an immigration attorney early can help you plan timelines and avoid costly delays.
