I’m from India and currently living in Arizona on an H-1B visa. My job contract is ending soon, and I’m really stressed about what happens next. My employer said they might not renew my position, and I’m worried about losing my status if I can’t find another sponsor quickly. How much time do I have to stay in the U.S. after my job officially ends, and is it possible to transfer my visa or change my status without leaving the country? I’d really like to stay legally and continue working here.

When your H-1B employment ends, you typically have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer or change your status. During that time, another company can file a transfer petition for you. If no petition is filed before the 60 days are up, you’ll need to leave the U.S. to avoid falling out of status.

You’re allowed to stay for up to 60 days after your job ends under USCIS’s grace period rule. Within that window, you can apply for a transfer, switch to another visa type like F-1 or B-2, or prepare to depart. It’s a tight timeline, so acting fast and getting legal advice is very important.

You have a 60-day grace period after your H-1B job ends to change status, transfer, or leave the U.S., but you must maintain lawful status within that timeframe.
