I’m from Ethiopia and currently studying in Louisiana on an F-1 student visa. My program ends in a few months, and I’m thinking about applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) to get some U.S. work experience before returning home. However, I’m not sure when to apply or what happens if my OPT is delayed. How can I make sure I maintain legal status during this transition period?

You should apply for OPT up to 90 days before your program ends to avoid delays in authorization.

If your OPT application is still pending after graduation, you can remain in the U.S. legally as long as it was filed on time. Once approved, you’ll have 12 months to work in a job related to your field of study, starting within 90 days of the approval date.

To stay compliant, work closely with your school’s Designated School Official (DSO) and monitor your SEVIS record. Always report your employment details promptly and avoid any unauthorized work. If you don’t receive approval within a reasonable time, contact USCIS or an immigration attorney to ensure no administrative errors delay your authorization.
