I’m from Eritrea and have been living in Colorado for about three years now. I came here originally on a visa and have since found a steady job that I really enjoy. I’m starting to think about my long-term future in the U.S. and whether I can adjust my status or find a way to stay permanently. What are my possible options to move from a temporary status to something more stable while continuing to work legally?

You may qualify for employment-based sponsorship or another visa category depending on your current status and your employer’s willingness to petition for you.

If you entered legally and your employer is supportive, they might sponsor you for a green card through employment. You’d need to check your eligibility and ensure your visa status is maintained until the process begins. Consulting with an immigration attorney can help clarify the exact path and timing.

There are several possibilities depending on your background, current visa type, and goals. Many workers in your position explore employer sponsorship, asylum (if conditions in Eritrea remain unsafe), or even family-based petitions if they have relatives who are citizens or permanent residents. Each route has its own forms, fees, and timelines. If you’ve maintained lawful presence, you may have a smoother path forward. A legal professional can help assess which option fits your specific circumstances best.
