I’m from El Salvador and have been living in Louisiana for almost two years. Recently, I received a notice that I might be placed in removal proceedings due to an issue with my visa expiration. I’m really scared and unsure of what happens next or if there’s any way to stop my deportation. Can I apply for any protection, or is there a way to reopen or delay my case while I figure things out legally?

Yes, you may be eligible for deportation relief depending on your situation and background.

If you fear returning to El Salvador because of violence or persecution, you could apply for asylum, withholding of removal, or protection under the Convention Against Torture. You can also ask an immigration judge to reopen your case if new evidence supports your claim.

Speak with an immigration lawyer immediately. Timing is critical in deportation cases. They can guide you through filing the right forms or motions.
