I’m from Burkina Faso and staying in Idaho as a J-1 exchange visitor. I recently got offered a research job after my program ends. Can I switch to a different visa to stay and work?

Yes, it may be possible to change your status to an H-1B work visa if the employer is willing to sponsor you. The application must be filed before your J-1 status expires, and you’ll need to meet the education and job qualification requirements.

If your J-1 visa has a two-year home residency requirement, you may need to apply for a waiver before changing status. Waivers can be based on no-objection statements, hardship, or fear of persecution, depending on your situation.

Another option is applying for a change of status to an F-1 student visa if you plan to continue studies instead of working immediately. This allows you to remain in the U.S. legally while pursuing further education.
