I’m from Bangladesh, and I’ve been in the United States for work on a valid employment visa. Now that I’m more settled, I want to take the next step and explore how I can move toward getting a green card. I’m not sure what options exist for someone already working here or what the process looks like. What should I know about starting the employment-based green card process?

Most people on work visas start the green card process through their employer, so the first step is confirming whether your company is willing to sponsor you. If they are, the process usually begins with PERM labor certification unless you're eligible for an exception. Knowing your exact visa category helps determine your path.

Some workers qualify for green cards based on advanced degrees, specialized skills, or national interest waivers. These categories don’t always require employer sponsorship. If you have strong qualifications or achievements, it may be worth exploring those options with an attorney.

Keep in mind that processing times can vary by category and by your country of birth. For Bangladesh, wait times are generally reasonable compared to heavily backlogged countries. Staying organized and understanding each step early on will make the transition smoother.
