I’m from Albania and currently living in Illinois on a student visa. I’ve recently been offered a great internship opportunity that might extend beyond my visa’s expiration date. I’m unsure if I can accept the position or apply for an extension while still maintaining legal status. What steps can I take to stay compliant and keep the offer?

You can usually participate in internships through OPT or CPT, depending on your program type and school authorization.

Speak with your designated school official (DSO) immediately. They can help determine whether the internship qualifies for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). Each has specific eligibility rules, and applying before your visa expires ensures you remain in lawful status throughout your employment period.

You must get authorization before starting the internship to avoid any status violations.
