I’m an F-1 student and I recently realized that I worked about 30 hours per week on campus for a couple of months. I honestly didn’t know the limit was 20 hours during the semester. I’m freaking out now and scared this means I violated my status permanently. How serious is this?

Technically working over 20 hours is a status violation, but it doesn’t automatically ruin your immigration future. USCIS often looks at intent and whether the violation was accidental or corrected quickly.

You should talk to your school’s international student office as soon as possible. They deal with situations like this more often than you think and can advise you on next steps or reinstatement if needed.

I made a similar mistake and still got my OPT approved later. It never even came up. That said, every case is different, so don’t ignore it and don’t lie about it in future applications.
